Why stretch
Stretching keeps fascia elastic, muscles mobile and joints moving comfortably. When done correctly, a short daily routine supports posture, balance and recovery.

Before you stretch
- Stretch after riding, not before
- Keep the horse warm
- Move slowly
- Never force anything
- Watch the breath and expression
- Stop if the horse braces or steps away
The goal is softness, not intensity.
Simple daily stretches
Carrot Stretches
To the shoulder, hip, between the knees and between the front legs. Helps release neck, poll and ribcage tension.
Front Leg Forward Stretch
Gently bring the forelimb forward to release shoulder and elbow tension.
Hind Leg Stretch
Bring the hind limb forward under the belly to release hip flexors and hamstrings.
Neck Low and Long
Encourage the horse to stretch their neck down to the ground for topline release.
Side Bending
Ask the horse to follow the treat to the side of the barrel. Great for ribcage mobility.
Wither Rocking
Light rocking helps relax the topline and soften the thoracic sling.
How often
Most horses benefit from these stretches three to five times per week. Senior horses may prefer shorter sessions more often.
Bottom line
A few minutes of mindful stretching goes a long way. It helps maintain the changes from bodywork and supports long-term comfort.
