🐎 Headshaking, Poll Tension and Bridle/Bit Fit

Why the poll gets tight

The poll is one of the most sensitive areas on the horse. It houses small muscles, nerves, vascular structures and fascial connections that affect the entire topline. Even mild tension here changes posture, comfort and the ability to relax under saddle.

Common causes of poll tension

  • Tight nosebands
  • Bits that are too thick or sit incorrectly
  • Browbands that pull the crown piece into the ears
  • Heavy rein pressure
  • Rider imbalance
  • Dental discomfort
  • TMJ tension
  • Poor posture or compensation in the ribcage or pelvis

Many horses communicate discomfort through small reactions long before headshaking starts.

How bridle and bit fit affect the body

Browband too short
This pulls the crown piece into the TMJ and ear base. The horse becomes reactive, fussy or inconsistent in contact.

Noseband too tight
This restricts jaw mobility. Fascia tightens through the cheeks, TMJ and poll.

Bit too thick or low
Pressure on the bars or tongue can cause bracing through the entire top half of the body.

Cavesson placement
Too high or too low affects breathing, jaw relaxation and poll comfort.

Signs your horse is uncomfortable

  • Head tossing
  • Inconsistent contact
  • Opening the mouth
  • Grinding teeth
  • Carrying the head behind the vertical
  • Tilting the head
  • Rubbing the face
  • Ear pinning when bridling

These behaviors are forms of communication, not defiance.

How bodywork helps

Poll release work is powerful. It softens fascia around the atlas, axis, jaw and tongue. This helps the horse breathe, balance and relax more easily. When poll tension decreases, the entire topline follows.

What owners can check

  • Proper bridle size and placement
  • Browband length
  • Bit thickness and position
  • Dental schedule
  • Saddle balance
  • Posture and ribcage mobility

Bottom line

Headshaking and poll tension often start with small fit issues. When the poll is comfortable, the whole body feels safer and more relaxed.
